The T‑Shirt You Keep Seeing – and the Movement Behind It
By Tricia Brown, SVP of Membership & Engagement, Thrivent
It might be in a grocery store line, during your mid-morning run or in a crowded café over lunch, but there’s a good chance you’ll spot a simple T-shirt with two words: Live Generously.
And once you notice one, you start seeing them everywhere. That’s the point.
What we wear has become one of the clearest ways we express who we are. In fact, 70% of Americans say their clothing reflects more than just a sense of style. More and more, people aren’t just choosing what looks good, they’re choosing what stands for something. And the brands that resonate today give people a way to express what matters to them.
At Thrivent, that starts with service.
The Live Generously T-shirts didn’t begin as branded merchandise. They grew out of Thrivent Action Teams, a program that gives people simple tools and funding to support the causes they care about. Like the program itself the shirts were created by members, for members and their volunteer partners. And the phrase they chose is a rallying cry for generosity in action. In other words, we make it easy for people to show up and give back.
And the T-shirts are part of that experience. When someone organizes a project, they receive a shirt, along with the friends, family and neighbors volunteering alongside them. That origin matters. The shirt isn’t just handed out, nor can it be purchased: It’s earned. It reflects something you did alongside people in your community.
Today, more than 16 million shirts — enough to outfit New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago combined — are still being worn long after those projects end. They spark conversations and connect people committed to giving back.
I see it firsthand. When I wear one, it rarely goes unnoticed. Often that recognition comes in the form of a smile, a question or a conversation with someone who has led a Thrivent Action Team of their own.
Behind that visibility is real impact. Since launching in 2014, Thrivent Action Teams have sparked more than a million client-led volunteer projects and helped raise over $2 billion for communities nationwide.
That’s what makes Thrivent’s Live Generously T-shirt different from traditional brand merchandise. It reflects acts of kindness and service people choose to be part of.
So, we took it a step further, inviting clients and non-clients alike to help shape it. Each year, tens of thousands of people vote to choose the next design, the one that best reflects how they want to express generosity in everyday life.
Through Thrivent Action Teams, millions of volunteers have come together to lead service projects across the country. And the T-shirt becomes an extension of that experience, a reminder of what someone did and an invitation for others to ask, engage and join in.
That’s why it shows up everywhere, because it means something to the people wearing it. It reflects who they are and what they value.
The lesson is simple: if people want what they wear to reflect who they are, brands have to give them something worth standing for — anchored in real action and shared by real people.
For Thrivent, that means making generosity visible, easy to act on and easy to share. Because that’s what deepens connection and grows impact.
