Q&A on Thrivent's 2027 Annual Total Payout
Thrivent announced it will deliver a record $605 million total payout of dividends and nonguaranteed policy enhancements to clients with membership in 2027. The total payout represents a 5% increase over the restated 2026 payout of $575 million, is more than double Thrivent’s annual total payout in 2021 and marks the first time the organization will surpass the $600 million threshold. The payout reflects Thrivent's long-term financial strength and stability, strong operating performance and investment results, disciplined financial management, and ongoing commitment to delivering value to clients.
Thrivent Chief Financial & Investment Officer David Royal explains what is behind the company’s record payout and what it means for clients.
Q: Thrivent has announced a record $605 million Total Payout in 2027. What does this milestone say about the company’s financial strength and ability to deliver value to clients over time?
David: The 2027 total payout reflects Thrivent’s long-term financial strength, disciplined management and commitment to delivering value to our clients. At $605 million, this is our largest payout ever and another meaningful example of how our strong financial position benefits the people we serve.
The milestone is important, but our focus is broader than any one year. We manage Thrivent for the long term so we can remain strong and stable while continuing to deliver value to clients over time.
Q; Thrivent’s 2027 total payout is more than double its annual payout in 2021, continuing a multi-year trend of increasing client value. What has enabled Thrivent to build that momentum over time?
David: The significant increase reflects the strength of Thrivent’s business. We’ve maintained disciplined investment management, favorable underwriting and claims experiences, and careful expense management to help generate surplus in our capital position. We retain sufficient capital so we can fulfill our promises and invest in future growth and return value to eligible clients through dividends and policy enhancements.
Payout growth since 2021 reflects consistent performance and intentional decisions made over many years, rather than any single decision or short-term development.
Q: As a membership-owned organization, how does the total payout demonstrate Thrivent’s commitment to delivering value for clients?
David: As a membership-owned organization, we measure success by the value we deliver to the people we serve. Our 2027 total payout makes that value tangible: eligible clients benefit directly from Thrivent’s financial strength through dividends and nonguaranteed policy enhancements. It also reflects our broader commitment to serving clients through purpose-driven advice, competitive products and responsible financial stewardship.
Q: For clients receiving dividends or policy enhancements, what would you like them to take away from this year’s announcement?
David: We want clients to see the total payout as evidence that Thrivent keeps them at the heart of what we do. But what matters most isn’t the number itself. It’s the trust behind it.
For generations, clients have trusted Thrivent to help them build financial security and prepare for what’s ahead. While dividends are never guaranteed, we’ve paid them every year since 1913. That’s more than a century of honoring our commitments and earning our clients’ trust.
Dividends and policy enhancements are determined by the performance of eligible products. Clients receiving these benefits can speak with their financial advisor about how the benefits may fit within their broader financial plans.
